Right after I post my crisis thing

Seconds after I complain about my current life, NYT tells me McNally Jackson is opening a store in Williamsburg this fall. Feeling slightly better already.

My vision of heaven is a huge museum with a big bookstore and a great cafe and a garden and an olympic sized outdoor swimming pool close to rolling green hills and comfortable beds. Also all times will simultaneously be represented so I can finally get to time travel for real and take a closer look at Akhenaten, Cleopatra, and regular people living their regular daily life through the history of mankind.  Please let it be so.

Am especially looking forward to hearing and laughing at really really old jokes.Would also like to learn how the ancient artists trained to become skilled enough to paint the caves at places like Lascaux. Where and how did they practice? Was it women and men? Girls and boys? Only people of a certain age and standing? The unknowing is an itch.

Crisis

Am in the midst of some kind of crisis.
Feel like I'm hanging mid-air, torn between so many decisions caused by things too private to write here.

On my way over to the Met to work and seek solace in medieval art. Sticking to what works for me. Went running this morning. Medieval art + running = few known side effects besides sore muscles and an urge to wear ridiculous footwear and tights.

How do you handle tough decisions?

Told Anders I was down, likely in the midst of a crisis. As always his reply was unpredictable, one of the reasons I really love him.

"Hang in there, stick it out, you're about to find stuff out about yourself. It's good for you, you're always so content."

What will come out of this? terrifying/exciting.

ps. Pic illustrates how there's always a small hand close to my face asking for something while I'm grabbing glasses holding on to whatever book I'm reading trying to simultaneously meet the demands of family, work and inner life.

Hello.

What I may buy this spring (wish list)

On a budget, may only buy most vital objects.
This spring, the list is as follows

  • 1 black cardi
  • 1 colored cardi (blue? yellow? red?)
  • undies
  • 1 bottle of Balenciaga Paris (if you have one and don't like perhaps there something you need that I have and could trade? let me know- just comment below)
  • 1 pair colorful sneakers (orange? yellow?)
  • 1 blouse
  • 1 pair of new earrings
Yes, that is Yoko Ono sitting under her wish tree. As you can see, she already has great sneakers and sunglasses. I heart Yoko.

Never leave home without it

Actually don't go anywhere without a banana, ever. No use denying the facts that we're all monkeys with phones.

Remember back in the day when I did Pilates?

Thinking of picking it up again. Have found a new place around the corner from where I live. Found this pic and caption on their website and feel they are both professional and understanding.

Also like their name: Flesh & Bone.

My only problem with Mini-Rodini

Is that their clothes don't come in adult sizes.

Behind the times

Can't stop looking at this cover of the past, the present and the future.
It's interesting that those three points in time are visualized in such a similar way.
Perhaps nothing really changes after all.

There's also something about this cover that saddens me and I can't pinpoint exactly what it is. Is it the knowledge that very few women behave like this in their natural habitat? Is it that their whole focus is directed to please the male gaze?

Is it the prospect of woman as a cute, ready-to-please species?

Here's a different image of three (even more naked) ladies that leaves me with a whole different, much better feeling.  This is something I could see myself doing. Running into the sunset sea, looking forwards, not backwards.

l'Wren!

SO SAD!

"Dear" Gap - let the kids be, please.

I would like some kind of estimate of how many times, before she reaches 18, the average female gets to hear/read that it's important for her to be beautiful. The ad above is one current example.

Gap, why do you feel a need to alert kids to what they already are? Beautiful  is just one of the millions of things young humans/kids are.  Why, oh why does this one trait keep being singled out as the number one characteristic to strive for? And why target children with this tired message?

Let the kids just be.

---
Update:
ok so now have read up on the ideas behind the campaign:

The theme for the spring GapKids collection is “Be Your Beautiful You.” The idea is that kids should be kids; that all kids, by virtue of being their playful selves, are beautiful. Kids are only kids for a finite period of time and we don’t need to rush them to dress like adults or or follow strict dress codes.

----
To me, this doesn't really change anything. Why is beautiful so important?

How did we let this happen?

Women used to be able to buy jeans, just jeans - comfortable jeans.
Now, if we're looking for comfy jeans we have to buy Boyfriend jeans?
Boyfriend jeans designed for women, boyfriend jeans no boyfriend ever has or ever will wear.

Jazz hands!

Recently read that Frozen is a gay movie

In that case, not gay enough! Dreamworks/Disney, feel free to bring on the gay movies! Would welcome them with open arms.

Can we please have a same sex love story? Where are they? We are ready. Almost over-ripe as it turns out.

(Here's a link if you've missed the Frozen=gay stories).

On the Ban Bossy-campaign

I don't have a problem with the word Bossy. I have a problem with a world having a problem with bossy women.

Speaking of what girls and women should and shouldn't be, am happily sharing Elise Gravel's print. I LOVE Elise Gravel. She's a boss. Her books and illustrations are so great.

Happiness is sometimes found in a skirt

Too small for me I think. You buy it.

Is this true for you too?

To wake up every morning feeling you have to catch up, with what a bit uncertain but for me includes the following (at least)

career
news of the world
domestic politics
friends
important books
cooking skills
finances
tax return
----
what's on your list? hoping you don't have one, that you're in step with your life.

The look of a transatlantic transgenerational conversation

this is what a shitty cover idea looks like

have lived my entire life as a girl and woman surrounded by strong, independent, free-thinking individuals of which none over the age of 3 dresses or behaves like this.

how did this cover happen?

the headlines brings further annoyance. "she just didn't know it"?!?!??!!?

How about this: WE, THE MEDIA, CHOSE TO FOCUS ON JON HAMM.

While waiting for Kelis' new album

http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/shows/saucy-and-sweet.html

I might even try cooking her Jerk Ribs and Farro salad. The goatmilk ice cream I'll pass on. I've tried goat milk in so many ways cause it's 2014, but it just tastes like goat to me and why would you really want that in your ice cream?

Even chèvre I think is overrated, perhaps because I've had three babies and the similarities between baby burps and chèvre can not be ignored.

Saluting my friends: Sofia Berg Böhm

I had a band with this amazing woman when we were in our teens.
I once heard her sing "La vie en rose" in the church at a mutual friend's wedding, a moment I count as one of my life's finest.

If you're thinking about Berlin

Have you seen this guide?

Feast_of_the_Malakans_(Pirosmani)

I especially loved this link.

Things I've seen lately but did not take pictures of

A man in a full length brown leather zipped jumpsuit with fur collar.

People walking around with big black crosses on their forehead. Coming from a heavily secularized country did not recognize this custom for what it was: Ash Wednesday signs of repentance.

Stumbled over this painting at the Met yesterday. Seems the fear of confusing one's wig powder with severe dandruff was a minor concern back in the day.

One of the things I like most about this city (or any city) is going on public transportation to study the looks of people. By now, years into this habit, I know this: virtually every single person you study will wear/reveal something that will surprise you, if you just study them long enough. Worth getting caught staring for.

Current daydreams

When I can't sleep but am too tired to read, I daydream (though at that late hour shouldn't it be called eve dream?).

I currently think about the cloning of Mammoths and which dead celebrities may be cloned if some of their cells can be found. Will we see a Marilyn with a weird but differently traumatized childhood? A Washington who enjoys telling lies? Will there be reality shows where they're all bunched together?

Other daydreams - if cloning oneself, would the cloned person feel like one's sister or one's child or neither?

And then back to that old old, yet always valid question: what makes a person/shapes a personality most - family, society, nature, nurture or all of the above?

Most looking forward to this spring: FOOD

Kelis new album will be released on APRIL 22ND. The JOY! CAN NOT WAIT.

La Bellezza

Went to see The Great Beauty late last night on my own at a local movie theatre and really enjoyed watching it but most of all enjoyed listening to Tony Servillo saying practically anything in his beautiful beautiful Italian.

Must not be the target audience for this

Only feeling after seeing it? Will never ever in my life own a Cadillac. I love living here in the US, it's a fantastic, amazing, interesting place unlike any other but this facet of America? Not a fan.
