First Brooklyn run

Went to a gym to work out and made such a European mistake. Kept running and running and was so slow in completing my 5k. I know I haven't been running for a while due to the foot surgery, but still - was I THAT out of shape? Annoying.

No.
I ran 5 miles=appx 8 kms.
No wonder that took longer than usual.

So great to be running again though, it's too hot for me to run outside in this weather.
Anders runs anyways. You can't stop him.

In top pic I'm showing my favorite sport drink: mix a little apple juice with sparkling water. So good.
Also important: whenever possible, try to pose your head positioned against lamp so lamp looks like a little hat.

Scandinavian running for foreigners

Someone, I think Reen, asked for a brief description of what you need for running in the Scandinavian weather (autumn/winter)...

She said "The clothes, the shoes... It's getting colder here everyday (for me at least since I just came to Norway from Asia and so used to having sun all year round".

Well, for basic fall/early winter/spring running You'll need long tights, real running socks, a running shirt and an extra outer layer. A running hat is a great idea and gloves. Many people swear by the Icebug shoes when snow and ice make running slippery and tricky.

As it gets really cold (I've been running in temperatures down to -17C), you need more clothes but perhaps not as much as you'd think. A buttwarmer is a great idea as are fleece lined running tights.

  • underwear and sportsbra
  • buttwarmers
  • socks
  • fleecelined tights
  • icebreaker merino underlayer
  • windbreaker
  • hat
  • gloves
  • kid neckwarmer
Here's another pic of the absurd number of things I sometimes have to put on when going for a run in cold weather. Most people don't bother. They run inside on the gym treadmills instead.

I really want to stress the importance of running during the winter in Scandinavia. If you don't the cold, cold, dark, dark, wet, wet winter will suck the life out of you. You'll wake up in the dark and go to bed in the dark. You will start saying things like "allt är så jobbigt nu".

But if you keep running, your friends adrenaline and endorphine will help you through winter and make you see the beauty that's all around you.

IT IS SO WORTH PUTTING ON EXTRA CLOTHING AND GETTING OUT FOR THAT HALF-HOUR. It's often the difference between gloom and glory. Keep running. This is the feeling winter running may reward you with:

Out running

As I was running to THE CHIFFONS, I was thinking this is how I'd like to describe the feeling of returning home from running:

You're 17. You look amazing. You're starting to believe you look amazing too, but even more important - you're filled with the emotion that ANYTHING can happen tonight. It's early summer. Your parent's are going away for dinner and you don't have to go with them cause you're going out with your friends and you know that the person you're so freaking interested in will be there.

You put on your favorite music. You dance a little while you're toweling up after showering. Your best friend texts you that he/she is on his way over. She/he arrives and brings whatever cold beers and snacks.

You hang out for a while and then you go out. And first you think THAT PERSON is not there, but then he/she arrives and looks your way and smiles and looks away and as the night progresses you're DRAWN TOWARDS EACH OTHER and talk and you feel like you're in command of the whole situation and then your friends want to leave and you say goodbye to that person, not because you don't want to hang out with him or her but because you want this whole ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN-feeling to last and you change numbers and a few hours later you get a text saying "can't wait to see you again" and that night you sit in your window looking out at the weirdly bright Nordic summer night and you can't sleep but who cares cause you're so happy.

Yes. That's how running makes me feel. But these days I return to find kids and the boy, now man who once turned up at my moving in-party with an empty cigar box that has since been filled with so many pictures and memories.

Keep running.

On Sunday, the world was so incredibly gorgeous. Sadly doesn't really translate through these pictures, you'll just have to go running for yourself.

Found this for all of us middleaged suburban moms who like to run with Snoop

I think this is kind of what I was looking for. Will put together a running list of the suggested tunes and some other songs I've found. Below, a last greeting from this office , am moving out. So next time I blog from the office, it will be from... I don't know yet!

Season's greetings to YOU from ME!

Running

It really looked like this yesterday when I was out running. That's why so many rich people live where I do. Rich people like horses and open spaces.

It really felt like this too. Endorphins will do that to you.
Sometimes when I post pictures of where I run, you say you wish you had some beautiful place to run too. But that's the wrong way around. Just go running. Keep running til endorphins kick in. Then you'll feel you're in the right place, where ever you are.

Going for a run

I invested in a running skort. Love it! This one's from adidas. So much more comfortable than my old highwaisted tights.

Ps. Den här giffen är till dig Johanna S!

Dear feet

Yesterday was a good day for running.

This is what the trees looked like.
And I guess this is what I looked like, to the trees.

Wild horses couldn't stop me. Not domesticated either.

Sorry you might loose the big toe toenails as a result of yesterday's running.
I think it was worth it.

It was also the perfect ending to those shoes, who've carried me miles and miles and miles until today they gave in (ripped open along the side of right foot). Ah the memories.

Morning run

So beautiful out this morning! Couldn't stop running!
Starting out. Love the old oak. If oaks could talk, what would it tell me? I'm thinking tales covering the hundreds of years the tree has lived. The tree likely thinks: could I have some rain please? And while you're at it, please get rid of the woodpecker.
My local Jane Eyre-fantasy begins here every long run.
The fastest stretch. Set to the tunes of Rihanna's Only girl in the world.

Sometimes there are horses to the left.

Waterside running for a more deluxe feeling.
Afterwards, happy, sadly thinking about nothing more interesting than various forms of protein.

Dear runners

Dear runners, if you're a woman who run at a speed of 1 km at a speed of 5 -7 km/h and you run at least once a week and you have the Nike+ equipment, you might want to join us in the Berlin vs London challenge.

Businessy and sophisticated London is so far behind while bohemian Berlin is about 100 kilometers ahead. Perhaps London-runners are wearing too nice shoes to move swiftly. Who knows? Help London out!

Ps. Yes it's running only. Yes you need the nike- stuff. Yes you need to mail me (emi@lovegun.net) to tell me you want in.
