haha! I guess people use it as often as they have blind dates...
I actually use this regularly in taxis for security purposes - but then I live in Bogotá, Colombia.
Shortly after I get in a taxi at night 'my partner' calls me and I tell him (in a slightly annoyed voice, because what's his problem, is he checking up on me..?!) that I'll be home in 10 minutes max. Don't know if it would actually deter anyone, but it makes me feel a bit safer.
